Europe 2024-25 Predictions and Chatter

The day is upon us already! While Champions League qualifiers kicked off a few weeks ago, most of the power leagues start this weekend! And naturally Manchester United will kick things off with the first EPL match of the year. Enjoy the campaigns, this should be a fantastic year of footy.

Serie A: Champions: Juventus.

Top 4: Inter Milan, AC Milan, Fiorentina.

I'm going with two upsets. First, I really like Thiago Motta, I think he will have Juventus flying. Second, David De Gea is back! A great story would be getting them to Champions League football for next year. I'm assuming Napoli sell Victor Osimhen though.

Ligue 1: Champions: PSG

Top 4: AS Monaco, Rennes, LOSC.

Even though they lost Mbappe, and the roster looks a little unbalanced, Luis Enrique is too good of a manager and they have too much quality not to win it. If LOSC can hang onto Jonathon David, I like them to push for the top. He's a quality player.

La Liga: Champions: Real Madrid

Top 4: Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Sociedad.

Copa Del Rey Champions: Real Madrid

Easiest prediction I've ever made. They won almost everything last year and now they add the world's best player? Real Madrid will lose a game or two, but they should win everything that they play for. I like the top 3 though, quietly they could and should all make the quarterfinals of Championship League.

Bundesliga: Champions: Bayer Leverkusen

Top 4: Bayern, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund.

DFB Pokal: Borussia Dortmund

Dare I say, upset? I'm not sure Bayern reloaded properly, but they still do have time. But give me Wirtz over Musiala, and give me Xabi Alonso over Kompany. And I love all 4. Just not sure Bayern can hang with an über confident Leverkusen side that kept both Frimpong and Grimaldo, their two key players. Will be a fun race.

Premier League: Champions: Arsenal

Top 4: Manchester City, Aston Villa, Manchester United.

FA Cup: Liverpool

Carabao Cup: Liverpool

Priorities? Liverpool haven't added to their depth, and I think they challenge on 4 fronts. The Premier League race will be super tight, I also think Newcastle, Spurs, Chelsea and West Ham will have a shout. My biggest surprise? Crystal Palace make a final with Glasner and finish 10th.

Conference League Winners: Chelsea

Europa League Winners: Eintracht Frankfurt

Champions League Winners: Real Madrid.

Quarterfinals: Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, FC Bayern, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Liverpool, Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan.

New format this year, and I'm not sure what to expect. It all depends on the random draw really. Let's just say Arsenal have the toughest draw, and Inter Milan get a cakewalk. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Mbappe scores in the final, and Real Madrid win another. Over Manchester City this time.

World's best 11:

GK - Courtois; Defense - Gvardiol, Saliba, Eder Militão, Carvajal; Midfield - Tchouaméni, Wirtz, Bellingham; Forward - Yamal, Mbappe, Haaland.

Pretty easy. Power grid is shifting, a lot of 25 and under.

Nate's 11:

GK - De Gea (I have to!); Defense - Luke Shaw (don't let me down bro!), Schlotterbeck, Yoro, Timber (he's going to be a star); Midfield - Bellingham, Bruno Fernandes, Declan Rice; Forward - Rashford (step up!), Evan Ferguson (big step), Rodrygo (unsung hero, he's so good).

Enjoy the season! It's back!!!

European Football Predictions

Well, as I sit here at 10:06 pm, players are still moving around the world, teams are still solidifying their squads for the 2023-24 season. This year is a little different than most, as we have seen some new financial muscle come in the form of Saudi Arabia. They've taken the world by storm (or at least 5 of their clubs), and while it looks to make things extremely difficult from an American viewership perspective, the competition and the money invested back into the European game can only be good for the game. They aren't signing the players of tomorrow nearly as much as they're signing stars looking for one last paycheck. We're still going to have the Erling Haalands, the Jamal Musialas and the Kylian Mbappes. I think. As of writing, Mbappe is still rostered with PSG, but with 21 days to go until the transfer window closes, anything can happen.

This year, I'm going to do things a little different. Usually I have a write up on the top 5 European leagues, and I finish with players to watch and the 11 that I think will have the most impact. But since I spend 95% of my watching on the EPL and Bundesliga, I'm going to dive into those a little bit more, but I'll still post the predictions of the other (now 4, because of Aiden and his affinity for FC Porto) leagues across Europe.

Serie A:
Nate - AC Milan
Aiden - Napoli
Logan - Inter Milan
Lucas - Juventus

Liga Nos:
Nate - FC Porto
Aiden - FC Porto
Logan - FC Porto
Lucas - Benfica

Ligue 1:
Everybody - PSG

La Liga:
Nate - Barcelona
Aiden - Real Madrid
Logan - Real Madrid
Lucas - Real Madrid

Champions League:
Everybody - Real Madrid (assuming Mbappe gets signed. If not all 3 kids pick Man City, dad picks Bayern Munich)

Europa League:
Everybody - Sevilla, because why wouldn't they?

Bundesliga:
Nate - Bayern Munich
Aiden - Bayern Munich
Logan - Bayern Munich
Lucas - BVB (Bless his innocent little heart)

After Harry Kane puts pen to paper, this league should be pretty straight forward. Bayern have won the last 11 titles; bringing in Kane, Raphael Guerreiro, KIM Jin Mae and Konrad Laimer probably isn't going to make things easier for anyone else. BVB, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen all had interesting summers, but nothing to make you think that they're going to push Bayern for the title.

Bayern Munich - A tiny rebuild. They shouldn't have won it last year, but did. Now with the four new signings and a deep rotation with Ryan Gravenberch and Leon Goretzka on for another year, I can't imagine anything other than a 12th consecutive Bundesliga title. The back 4 looks strong with Guerreiro, KIM, Matthias De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui. Manuel Neuer has another year in him, and with Kane up top receiving from Musiala, Coman, Mueller and Sane, it may take you back to the treble days of 2013.

Borussia Dortmund (BVB in my house) - They tried to replace Jude Bellingham, but it doesn't come off as a team that can challenge for a title this year. Marco Reus and Mats Hummels are a year older, and Marcel Sabitzer, Felix Nmecha are decent enough players, but not players that can push Dortmund on to another level. Nico Schlotterbeck is a fantastic CB, but everyone around him lacks that little extra. 2nd seems to be the place they are most comfortable.

Bayer Leverkusen - I was sad to see them sell Moussa Diaby who I think was the most electrifying winger outside of Kingsley Coman, but 55 million Euros is nothing to scoff at. It let Leverkusen balance out the side a little more, and now they have my favorite back 4 in Alejandro Grimaldo, Jeremie Frimpong, Edmond Tapsoba and Piero Hincapie. If Tapsoba stays through the window, this team has the depth to challenge for 2nd.

FC Union Berlin - Great team, with one of the smallest budgets in 1st division European football. And the style of play is great too, as they sit on this ridiculously low block, and then counter the crap out of you. Now they've added Brendan Aaronson and David Fofana on loans and they're only going to get faster. Battling on domestic and Champions League fronts will be tough, but they have the team spirit and drive to do well in both.

RB Leipzig - From a sales perspective, they probably had the best summer in Europe. Getting over 220 million Euros for Dominik Szoboszlai, Christoph Nkunku and Josko Gvardiol is fantastic business, and it's hard to be upset about it. But Champions League and better clubs around you? I think they end up 5th this year.

Eintracht Frankfurt - As long as they are able to hang onto Randal Kolo Muani, one of the most exciting strikers in the world right now, they have a shot at pushing top 4. I think they'll settle around 6th.

Mainz 05 - A surprisingly good end to the season last year (win over Bayern, draw against BVB), Mainz has really become a mainstay in the Bundesliga division. No sensational new signings this year, but an interesting midfield of Tom Krauss (another Leipzig sale), and Anton Stach makes Mainz one to watch in the push for Thursday night football (Europa League)

SC Freiburg - Last year was probably the year. They were so close to qualifying for Champions League. Now I think they're have to rely on a great home atmosphere and one of the best managers in Christian Streich. Probably not another top 5 finish, but consolidation in the 8th spot.

VFL Wolfsburg - Another club that sold a little bit more than necessary. Koen Casteels is one of the more underrated GK's around Europe and Maxence Lacroix is slowly becoming a top CB that should get interest from big clubs, but I think VFL will be a little short in pushing for Europe. 9th for me.

BMG (Gladbach is as short as I'll go) - More fun to say than type, BMG had an interesting off-season as well. Yann Sommer and Marcus Thuram were the face of the club for a long time, but now both are gone. They still have some interesting players like Alassane Plea, Luca Netz and Joe Scally, but they're probably a year away. If Julian Weigl can reach the levels of his game at Dortmund and they find a new GK, then maybe they'll push for a European place.

Werder Bremen - I always have a soft spot for this club. I'm not sure why, as I never made it to Bremen, and I didn't really know any Werder fans when I lived in Germany. But that green wall is immense, and their fan support is some of the best in Europe. Niclas Fuellkrug and Naby Keita are some of the main headliners, but they're probably a few players away from top half. Should do enough to steer clear from relegation though.

FC Koln - Another interesting club. They had a great run last season, where they almost included themselves in the conversation of European nights. But they also had a disasterous run that almost put them in the relegation battle at the end of the year. 12th should be comfortable, but the ride will be worth watching.

FC Augsburg - Was last year worst case scenario? Not safe until the final weeks of the season, Augsburg usually has the quality to finish around mid-table. A lot of players still to like in this group like Ruben Vargas and Niklas Dorsch, but Americans will be disappointed to know that Ricardo Pepi is no longer around.

Vfb Stuttgart - 14th will be a relief from the near disaster of last season. They probably should've been right there with FC Schalke near the relegation scrap heap, but then they snuck some results like the 3-3 draw vs Dortmund and a 6-1 aggregate win against Hamburger SV to stay in the Bundesliga. So far they've had a great pre-season, and besides Bayern and Union, maybe the best transfer window (Deniz Undav from Brighton was sneaky). It should be enough to keep them safe.

Hoffenheim - Ugh. I don't like seeing these guys as they always give the BVB boys a difficult match. For years they were super entertaining, and high flying at the highest levels of the Bundesliga with their super attacking 3-4-3. Now they've settled into a team that just tries to stay safe every year, and I think they'll be able to do it again. One spot above the playoff place.

Vfl Bochum - Oh no! The little brothers! I've always liked Bochum, especially because it's one of my favorite German cities. Their team is scrappy, but they always have a surprise result in them like the 4-1 smashing of Bayern Munich last year. They had to dump a couple of players this summer, but I still hope they have enough to beat whatever 2nd division team they'd run into in the relegation playoff.

Darmstadt FC - I think they were the big surprise of the 2nd Bundesliga. I know a lot of people expected HSV (Hamburg) to overtake them at the end, but it never happened. I didn't get to see them much last year, but it looks like they're solid defensively, and difficult to break down. Never easy to survive in the wide open Bundesliga.

.1 FC Heidenheim - Brand spanking new to the Bundesliga, and its pretty exciting. I tried to learn as much about the game as I could when I lived in Germany 23 years ago, and I don't have any memory of this club at the time. (They were competing in the 5th division). The Bundesliga will probably be too big, but I'm excited to see what this little town from Baden-Wurttemberg can do.

Champions League: Bayern, BVB, Leverkusen, Union Berlin
Europa League: RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt
DFB Pokal winner: Leverkusen
Player of the year: Jamal Musiala
Young Player of the year: Florian Wirtz

English Premier League:
Everyone - Manchester City (Go away, Pep)

With another 3 weeks to go until the transfer window closes, I can not sleep. I'm worried Pep is going to go out and replace Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan in one fell swoop. Whether that's Lucas Paqueta or someone else, I just don't think this is the squad he'll go into this season with. Everyone around him has really spent this year to get closer, and with City going for an unprecedented quadruple, I've got to think he's not done shopping yet. The real race should be top 4, especially with Aston Villa entering the fray. Any of Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle, Liverpool, Villa and Chelsea could be battling for those top 4 places. Sorry Spurs but if Harry goes, it's over.

Manchester City - After watching soccer for 25+ years now, I've always seen things the same way I believe that Sir Alex Ferguson saw things. GK and a strong back 4 is key, depth is a blessing but unnecessary. Midfield needs rotation; 6-7 strong midfielders is the right number to chase multiple trophies. 4 forwards is the right number, as form takes precedent over all, but injuries will happen and players need to be ready. Pep also comes from this school of thought, I believe. Haaland, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez are so good, that he hasn't even been linked to another attacker. It reminds me of the Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar era. Everyone offers something different, but when everyone is getting opportunities and goals, it's a tough machine to stop. All four players played big roles on the way to the treble last year. Now with more midfield depth (John Stones, anyone), and a back 4 to rival the Evra, Rio and Vidic era, Manchester City are here to stay. I hate it.

Arsenal FC - Gross. All that spending, and they're going to finish 8-10 points behind City for the second year in a row. I love the big 3 signings - Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber. I wanted all three on Manchester United at one point or another (I wish BVB wasn't priced out on Havertz, he is the ideal player for the Marco Reus role). Even improving the GK situation was spot on. But Arsenal is still missing a major component and that's the 9 spot. Gabriel Jesus is a luxury, and a nice player. But can any of you die hard football fans really think that Jesus will score 30 and lead his club to a domestic title? Or Europe? Take a look. It's Haaland, it's Mbappe, it's Lautaro Martinez, it's Robert Lewandowski. Bayern got so scared winning the league by a point, that they're spending 100 million on Harry Kane (in his 30s). Take a good look, Arsenal. And then go buy an elite CF.

Liverpool - Great off-season. The end.

Manchester United - ETH is really in a new spot. He's never had this kind of budget before, but I think he thinks the squad needs more refreshing than it does. Which is fine. I think the best summer is Raya from Brentford, Kane from Spurs, and maybe Mount but I would've preferred Conor Gallagher. For everything that United is, they're similar to Arsenal, but without the ball. Last year, ETH had always set up really nice, and when we got our attackers (Bruno and Rashford, especially) into space, United was super dangerous. So go sign a ball winning mid, a prolific striker, and a ball playing GK, and it should've been done. We'll see what Andre Onana can do. He's a great shot stopper, can send any ball 50 yards, but he is erratic. Mason Mount is a great supportive midfielder, but in a tight 1-1 match when we need him winning and distributing? We'll see. And when Rasmus Hojlund has a glorious chance in a Champions League QF, but he's only got 7 goals on the season so the whole crowd takes a collective, deep breath? He better pass the ball to Alejandro Garnacho.

Newcastle United - Great summer as well. Sandro Tonali is probably my favorite deep playmaker in the world. He can pick a pass, win a ball and go for goal. Not too many of those around. Harvey Barnes is tenacious, and also has an eye for the goal. Tino Livramento is a 20 year old Kieran Trippier. Add that to a team that qualified for Champions League football? They're going to push for top 4 all the way to the final day.

Aston Villa - The ascension from 11 months ago is inexpressible. They should be in the championship right now with a slipping... smiling Steven Gerrard. And now with (for the last time) Good Ebening Unai Emery running the ship, they make me just as nervous as Liverpool and Newcastle do. The summer was almost perfect. Youri Tielemans will do a job. Pau Torres will be one of the best Premier League CB's by the end of the year. Moussa Diaby will be the most exciting of the three. Add that to a team with a very strong self-belief, and a feeling of unfinished busines, and I think Europe will be their destiny by next May.

Chelsea - Congrats. You finally got the right manager. But, they've had the strangest summer I can ever remember (the only one that comes close is when Leverkusen said "fuck it", and sold half their team to Bayern Munich), and I don't think I can predict what matchday 1 will look like for this club. All we know is that their first game will be a 0-0 draw with Liverpool. But after that? I think they have enough quality and a manager that will go into the league confident and get them back to the European places.

Brighton - I'm devastated that they have to sell Moises Caicedo to Liverpool this weekend. He is one of the best midfielders in the world, don't @ me. Liverpool went from an exciting team that will probably beat you 5-3, to a team with a base that they can build around. More 2-0, 3-1 results. The same thing happened last year at Brighton. This team with Leandro Trossard, Caicedo and Alexis McAllister was so good. And I'm sure they'll figure it out and finish top half again. But imagine if everyone had stayed?

Fulham - My surprise pick for the year. Why, you ask? Because Aleksandar Mitrovic is pissed as heck. He wants that Saudi cash, and who can blame him. When he was in the 2nd division of English football, he bullied everyone. But it wasn't quite so easy at the highest level. He still had good stats, but not record breaking numbers. So imagine the goals in Saudi Arabia? And the money... He's still only 28 so I see the Fulham perspective, but they still have a great team. Carlos Vinicius is probably ready for the role. I guess I don't know, but I did draft him onto my Premier League fantasy team. Andreas Pereira is a EPL quality midfielder.. Raul Jimenez can always score a couple. So either they keep an angry Mitrovic who goes and scores 20 goals, or they make a ton of cash, purchase a few players, and find themselves in a very comfortable place in the Prem.

Brentford - Sneaky good signings, but strictly from Freiburg. Kevin Schade will be one of the most exciting players in the league. Mark Flekken will be just as good as Raya, if not better. But I don't think Brentford will sneak up on teams like their signings this year. 10th is still good for the club that won't have Ivan Toney for some time.

Tottenham Hotspur - Unless Ted Lasso takes over, I think it's going to be a long year. Losing Harry Kane will be a blow that they won't be able to come back from. For as good of a player as he is, it's the other stuff that will hurt the most. Who loves the club as much as he does? Who will drag Spurs from difficult matches and offer a match winner when they need it the most? I know who most of you are thinking, and I love Heung-Min, but without his partner in crime, he's going to be asked to do more than I think he can handle. They still have 3 weeks, but for now I think they're bottom half.

Burnley - Vincent Kompany is a gem. James Trafford will be a househould name by the end of the season. Sander Berge was a wonderful, shocking signing. Josh Brownhill busts his nuts for the jersey. And Anass Zaroury will be on the lips of many announcers when Burnley shock City in tomorrow's match. (Okay, not the last one. But he's an intriguing little winger).

West Ham - What a strange summer. Huge, phenomenal money for a DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER (Oh, he's English, got it), and then for 6 weeks they sat on the cash. Now they quickly bring in Edson Alvarez, Harry Maguire and James Ward Prowse. I mean, sure? I think they'll crash out of Europa League early, but the team will come around and finish in a non-threatening place to either end of the table.

Nottingham Forest - So many signings in the last 24 months. I have no idea who their best players are, or even what their best eleven would be. I don't think they're done shopping either, and the results will be a slow and steady build to another year in the Premier League.

Everton - They're back! It's the Everton that we remember from our youth. Threatening to the big clubs, but never challenging them. More comfortable around the minnows, but never swimming with them. I think they're start well, and then get safety with a few weeks to go. They'll probably beat Fulham this weekend.

Crystal Palace - It's tough to lose a talisman. I like this team a lot, but I thought Patrick Vieira was doing some great things. They just had the fixture list from death for a couple of weeks last year, and he couldn't get a result. Roy Hodgson is fine, but he won't inspire a Zaha-less side to top half. They'll survive, but I bet they have a scare.

Wolverhampton - Woof. Let your manager go right when the season starts. Bad juju. Ruben Neves and Jimenez are gone, they still haven't replaced Diogo Jota, and they sold their best defender (Nathan Collins) to Brentford. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and not put them in a relegation place, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they're playing in the championship by August of 2024.

Bournemouth - They had an amazing 3 weeks, got 9 points and survived the crazy relegation scrap of last season. They've added Justin Kluivert, who I thought would be further along in his career at this time. Unfortunately, that's about it, and in the Gauntlet that is the English Premier League, it won't be enough.

Sheffield United - They sold Sander Berge to a relegation rival. Do you need any more information?

Luton Town - Luton was able to add some nice pieces to their squad and have a really good blend of youth and experience. Ryan Giles, Thomas Kaminski and Tahith Chong are all fascinating signings and could give the club enough competitive spirit to do battle in the league. I know every neutral will be rooting for them, myself included. But in every scenario, I just can't see them get to safety.

Confer storyline:

I want to shout out all 3 of my boys for their soccer journey and the state of MN as well. First, the state.

Lately, I've been chatting with some soccer personalities and coaches, and all of them share the same belief that MN soccer is going to a level it's never been too before. Back when I did my thesis paper for my college program, my research had shown that MN soccer was waaaaaaaaaayyyyy behind the rest of the country. We didn't have the right programs, we couldn't get the right coaches, and we couldn't get anyone to care enough to invest (winter facilities, good fields just to name a few). Now we have a professional team (on the boys side) with 5 tiers of soccer (1st team, 2nd team, U19, U17, U15), and coaches and systems that get the best out of a really strong youth group. We have a professional women's team that gets amazing crowds to every game. There's great kids all around. I think we can continue to push and get these boys and girls more collegiate and professional opportunities. I absolutely love doing my share.

If anyone wants to play along, the next time you see your kids' coach, or your club's director, or anyone involved in the game, just thank them for what they're doing. I see more and more A/B/C/D licenses in the state and I'm super proud of the direction we're going. I'm hoping to get more licensing in the next year or two myself.

Once upon a time, I believed everything I heard. And I heard that my kids development would stagnate because their dad never played soccer growing up. It really hurt me at the time; I wish I could've played the game, but it didn't work out that way. I've doubled down on the sport and because of my lack of experience, I really take care as to the stuff that we work on when the boys let me train them on the game. Every time I don't want to go outside and kick with the boys, or I just want to sit on the couch and watch a show, I use that information as fuel. Now I love our journey, and I've taught them not to listen to the outside noise.

Speaking of a crazy journey, Aiden! What a year! From the disappointment of making a new club's 2nd team, when we really thought he had the skill set to make a top team, we've come a long way. The 2nd team placement ended up being best case scenario, as Aiden started to put in even more work. He was surrounded with coaches that believed in him and set him up with great situations to succeed and achieve personal and team goals (although we just missed the ultimate team goal), and he ended up with double the friendships as he played almost 80 games with the two teams! It was a long year, but we wouldn't have traded it for anything. And the sequel will be even better as he's supported by the same coach on the Minneapolis United top team! Hard work pays, believe it!

Logan and Lucas had a difficult decision to make as they were offered top spots on two different teams. From where I was sitting, it was a win-win situation. Rush offered great families, great teammates, growth with a team that was entering the U13 competitions at the highest level, and a coach that I've personally always wanted to work with. I was ready to get back on the sideline and really push on, the way Aiden and I had for the past 12 months. The other option was to join the Minneapolis United U12 academy team with friends from indoor and Hispanic leagues with a coach that I think is the best in the state at both development and getting results at the highest level. It was really hard for them, but after a few nights they decided to join Aiden at Minneapolis United! Sara and I are super excited for them, and they deserve everything that's gone their way. My favorite part of the journey is the behind the scenes stuff. Kicking in the back yard, Every. Single. Day. Getting to practice first. Leaving practice once the sun has gone down, and our car is the only car left in the parking lot. We want to see all MN clubs continue to do well abroad whether it's TFE or Manitou in EA league, MTA and St. Croix in ECNL or Blackhawks and MU in the USYS league. I'm hoping it's infectious, and we can continue the brand of making Minnesota soccer something to reckon with!

Enjoy the season(s)! Comment your winners if you dare!

NFL Predictions for the 2023 Season

Hello, it's me.

I was wondering if after all these years you would like to meet.

Not really, but looks like it's Jordan Love season in Green Bay. This is a strange year for me; most times in August, I believe that the Green Bay Packers can challenge for the NFC North title and possibly even more. I don't know what to think this year. I've seen a few picks putting the Packers in 1st, and also a few that has them finishing behind the Bears in last place. I could see either scenario. So I guess we're meeting Jordan Love no matter what. Let's get to the predictions.

AFC East - I went back and forth on this one. I think the Bills have a team that should be coming out of the AFC and meeting someone in the Super Bowl. But they also might not win their own division. I love Mike McDaniel. If Tua doesn't get misappropriated during his concussions last year, they may have gotten a lot further. They still made the playoffs even botching his concussion protocol. I think and hope that McDaniel has learned from his errors, because even though they didn't have a first round pick, they had some of the best upgrades of the off-season (Jalen Ramsey, Chosen Anderson). This might be it though. Once they have to pay Tua, players will have to be let go. Happy Aaron got his move, but the Jets are weird. 3 of the best players in the League, but then a rather light roster everywhere else.
1. Miami Dolphins (4)
2. Buffalo Bills (5)
3. New York Jets
4. New England Patriots

AFC North - Deepest division in football? The Bengals could be the best team in the league, if they are right about their secondary. Ravens and Steelers are going to be really tough outs this year, especially if their QB's kick up another notch (Lamar will have too, with that money. They were able to build around him before, but now every draft pick and signing will be cruicial). And the Browns... if Watson is 75% of what he was at Houston, and Myles Garrett pushes for DPOY, then they could sneak into a playoff spot. It's going to be tough though.
1. Cincinnati Bengals (2)
2. Pittsburgh Steelers (7)
3. Baltimore Ravens
4. Cleveland Browns

AFC South - Weakest division in football? But if every team hits on their new QB, it could get strong in a hurry. I don't think the Jaguars will have to worry about it, as Doug Pederson linking up with Trevor Lawrence can make big waves. This probably isn't Belichick/Brady, but if they see this out, I think the Jaguars have a Super Bowl appearance in their future. Will Levis, Anthony Richardson and CJ Stroud all have high ceilings, but I think each one has a deficiency that doesn't make them a top prospect at the position.
1. Jacksonville Jaguars (3)
2. Tennessee Titans
3. Houston Texans
4. Indianapolis Colts

AFC West - There are things that I like about all four teams, but the Kansas City Chiefs are the only team that really stands out in this division. It starts and ends with Andy Reid and Patty Mahomes. Their chemistry is incredible. They find weapons that suit all of Mahomes' strengths. Knowing that they're always going to lose guys while they're paying Mahomes, they've drafted really well over the past couple of years. They have a couple of paper cracks, but really have to be considered favorites to win their 3rd in 5. Raiders, Broncos and Chargers are going to have to wait their turn for awhile, but I think Vegas is doing it right. Hang on with some veterans, hit the draft hard, and wait for the cornerstone QB and a window in the future.
1. Kansas City Chiefs (1)
2. Los Angeles Chargers (6)
3. Denver Broncos
4. Vegas Raiders

Playoffs:
Chargers 6 at Jaguars 3 - Rematch. Jaguars do it again.
Steelers 7 at Bengals 2 - I think Cincy will be cooking by now.
Bills 5 at Dolphins 4 - At the end of the day, division won't matter. Bills win.

Bills 5 at Chiefs 1 - Poor Buffalo. Best team yet, and it mounts to zero. Chiefs again.
Jaguars 3 at Bengals 2 - This is wild. These 2 QB's could be doing this for years to come. Bengals.

AFC Championship: Bengals 2 at Chiefs 1 - We haven't seen back to back champs since 2004. Players get too hungry, injuries amount to too many problems. If Mahomes is healthy all year, it will be hard to beat them. But I like Joey B. I think it's his time. Bengals.

NFC East - Eagles tried to become the most complete team in football this off-season, and all the while replaced two coordinators on their Super Bowl finalist staff. I think there are 2 camps on the thoughts of the Eagles. Some (not me) think Hurts is an MVP candidate, surrounded by the most explosive roster in the league and added D'Andre Swift. They have quite possibly the best CB tandem in the league in James Bradberry and Darius Slay. And they got one of the highest draft grades in the 2023 NFL draft. Then there are those (like me) that think they had an easy path to the Super Bowl, by beating the New York Giants all three times they saw them, played SF's 4th string QB in the NFC Championship game. We'll see how good they really are with a much more difficult schedule this year. Dallas's window is getting smaller, but the defense is very strong, and adding a Stephon Gilmore should be great for the locker room. Washington and New York leave much to be desired.
1. Philadelphia Eagles (2)
2. Dallas Cowboys (5)
3. New York Giants
4. Washington Commanders

NFC North - Maybe the most unpredictable division in the league. I've seen all four teams mentioned as a division winner, even the lowly Chicago Bears. I think it's Detroit's to lose; they've added some nice pieces and finally have a little continuity to push on and do some damage come playoff time. This feels like a last hurrah for the Vikings and the Kirk Cousins experiment. I think it's safe to say he's almost the perfect B+ QB; he can win your 4 to 5 games every year, but he will probably lose 1 or 2 on his own. It's just sad that it always seems to come around playoff time. The Packers are interesting, as I think they have a Super Bowl defense in waiting, but the offense is the most questionable in the league. Is it a new playbook? Will they rely mostly on the run, option or pass? I think these questions won't be answered until the regular season. Chicago? Could be the surprise package this year with a much better offense on paper, and the Edwards and Edmunds signings were great. If Eddie Jackson and Jaquan Brisker continue to excel together, this will be a tough team to beat.
1. Detroit Lions (3)
2. Minnesota Vikings (7)
3. Green Bay Packers
4. Chicago Bears

NFC South - Who cares?
1. Carolina Panthers (4)
2. New Orleans Saints
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
4. Atlanta Falcons

NFC West - Seahawks had my favorite draft. Devon Witherspoon and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, are you kidding me? What great additions to an already good football team. They rallied around Geno Smith, and he had his best season. Which makes you wonder, was it Russell Wilson or Pete Carroll? I still think the 49ers have some unfinished business after last year. You couldn't have seen any team winning the conference championship under those circumstances. I think they will fight together, and with a healthier season, could end up at the end. It already feels like Sean McVay gave up. Arizona might be the worst team in the league. They might even want to be that bad. (Caleb Williams)
1. San Francisco 49ers (1)
2. Seattle Seahawks (6)
3. Los Angeles Rams
4. Arizona Cardinals

Playoffs:
Seahawks 6 at Lions 3 - Seattle is building to go on a run. Detroit was happy to get here.
Cowboys 5 at Panthers 4 - Bryce Young has a great rookie campaign. But Dan Quinn is another level.
Vikings 7 at Eagles 2 - Probably the only team Cousins doesn't want. Slay, Darius, slay.

Seahawks 6 at 49ers 1 - I want to pick the upset here, but 49ers are too smart. They'll be ready.
Cowboys 5 at Eagles 2 - Two juicy division rival matches. But Eagles roll.

NFC Championship: Eagles 2 at 49ers 1 - NFC seems pretty straight forward, at least if no major players go down for the season. These two teams are the class of a weaker conference. If the 49ers have Brock and the home game, I think it'll be difficult for the Eagles to win.

Super Bowl: Cincinnati Bengals vs San Francisco 49ers. Two teams built completely different. But boy, if we can get this, it should be a special treat. Burrow vs Bosa. Taylor vs Shanahan. Cheers to hoping!

MVP: Joe Burrow
OPOY: CMC
DPOY: Micah Parsons
OROY: Bryce Young
DROY: Joey Porter Jr.

NCAA and NFL Preview 2022-23

Time just flies these days. Usually I am 100 pages into my college football reading by this point, and I think I've read maybe 5 this summer? I'm going to try and put a little more on the NFL predictions as I've really been looking forward to this season, but college is only getting a quip this time around. Thanks for reading!

College Football Final Four:

Alabama vs Georgia. (1vs4) I just think the SEC is beast. The two games this weekend that may have changed my mind (Georgia vs Oregon, Utah vs Florida) both saw the victor coming out of this conference. Georgia just played their toughest game, so they should make the SEC Championship game no problem. Alabama gets their tough game next week, but I think they are able to roll Texas by a couple of touchdowns. If they can get through the Arkansas/Texas A&M week in early October unscathed, I imagine both of these teams will be undefeated when they meet in the SEC Championship game. Alabams wins the first one so this would be a rematch?

Winner: Alabama

Ohio State vs Oklahoma State. This is a tough one, because I think that 5 of the nation's 10 best teams are in the SEC. (Bama, Georgia, A&M, Arkansas, Kentucky). The rest of the country is reloading (Oklahoma, Oregon, etc) or rebuilding (USC, Texas, Notre Dame). I don't think Clemson can go through their schedule undefeated, but maybe, just maybe Oklahoma State can? It won't matter anyway, as this country has 2 really, really good teams at the top this year.

Winner: Ohio State

Championship: Alabama vs Ohio State. The two best teams in the nation and I'm not sure it's very close.

Soccer Preview 2022-23

Fast food version of what I usually do, just with all the busy-ness of life with children and all of their activities. Excited for this European campaign, pretty competitive balance that I don't believe we've seen since before the Messi and Ronaldo era at Barcelona and Real Madrid.

La Liga: Champion: Barcelona

Champions League: Real Madrid, Atletico, Sevilla.

Player to watch: All the Barcelona attackers. Who starts? How does Xavi keep everyone happy?  Does someone stand out and carry Barcelona to the title? My guess is yes, Lewandowski, and Xavi will be a legend once again.

Copa del Rey: Atletico

Logan picks Real Madrid

Lucas picks Real Madrid

Aiden picks Real Madrid

Serie A: Champion: Inter Milan

Champions League: Juventus, AC Milan, Roma.

Player to watch: Pretty easy for me. Romelu Lukaku. He is an interesting specimen. Guy dominates in certain situations, and disappears in certain situations. He claims he'll be happy again, so does that mean he gets Inter to the summit? I believe he will.

Coppa Italia: Roma

Logan picks Inter

Lucas picks Inter

Aiden picks Napoli

Ligue 1: Champion: Lyon

Champions League: PSG, O. Marseille

Player to watch: Lionel Messi. Six goals in last season's campaign. He really doesn't look that happy at PSG. If he has a similar goal tally this year, I don't think they win the league. Alexandre Lacazette is back!

Coupe de France: PSG. Easy.

Logan picks PSG

Lucas picks PSG

Aiden picks OM

Bundesliga: Champion: Bayern Munich

Champions League: Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, E. Frankfurt

Player to watch: Sadio Mane. I can finally cheer for him again! One of my favorite players at Southampton, I had to deal with him thriving for my biggest rivals. It wasn't enjoyable. Love him at Senegal, and I think that Bayern can get him to a level in which we might see an African team get to a semi-final of the World Cup.

Dfb Pokal: Not Bayer Leverkusen! Borussia Dortmund.

Everyone pick Bayern. Since 2013, no reason to think about anyone else.

Premier League: Champion: Liverpool

Champions League: Man City, Tottenham, Arsenal

Player to watch: Raheem Sterling. I think this should be compared more than its been, but while I think Gabriel Jesus made a great move and can be seen as the missing piece to getting Arsenal back into the Champions League, I think that Sterling messes with the good vibes of Chelsea and won't make them better than they already are. Losing Lukaku and Timo Werner won't hurt as much as some might think, but Sterling is not the answer, certainly when they already have a Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic to play in those roles. Window isn't quite closed yet, but Sterling might be playing in Europa league next season.

FA Cup: Newcastle. Maybe my most bold pick, but let's have some fun. Leicester won it a few seasons back, it can be done.

Logan picks Man City

Lucas picks Man City

Aiden picks Man United (no, I'm not giving my 12 year old drugs.)

Liga Nos: Champion: Benfica

Champions League: FC Porto

Player to watch: Henrique Araujo. Everyone is excited about Darwin Nunez, and rightfully so. I'm excited about the next great Benfica striker. The player that should take over for Nunez, I honestly don't think much will change. They should catch FC Porto this year.

Taca de Portugal: Sporting Lisbon

Logan picks Benfica

Lucas picks Sporting

Aiden picks FC Porto

Champions League Final Four: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich

Europa League Final Four: Manchester United, Villarreal, AS Roma, Freiburg

World best 11:
GK: Alisson Becker
LB: Andrew Robertson
CB: Jules Kounde
CB: Virgil Van Dijk
RB: Achrif Hakimi
LW: Serge Gnabry
CM: Kevin De Bruyne
CM: Joshua Kimmich
RW: Mo Salah
CF: Robert Lewandowski
CF: Kylain Mbappe

Lot of debate in my house. Boys hated my Kounde pick. But I think that was a big coup for the Spanish moneybags. Gnabry over Pedri was a hard one for me too, that kid is sensational. Lot of strikers to choose from as well. We had Sadio Mane, Erling Haaland, Neymar, Karim Benzema, Darwin Nunez and Harry Kane all get mentioned. I think it could go to any of the 8.

Nate's 11:
GK: Jan Oblak - So underrated. I think he continues to be top 5 in the world.
LB: Raphael Guerriero - Makes Dortmund tick.
CB: Nico Schlotterbeck - Loved this signing.
CB: Mats Hummels - Maybe for the last time?
RB: Reece James - Probably one of my favorite players in world football.
LW: Marcus Rashford - It hurts me so much to see him struggling.
CM: Sergej Milinkovic Savic - Love this kid. I wish Man United could sign him.
CM: Jude Bellingham - I get it, probably his last season in Dortmund. I'll enjoy every minute.
RW: Jadon Sancho - I've seen his greatness, hope Man United gets to see it soon.
CF: Erling Haaland - As much as I want to boot him, I can't.
CF: Robert Lewandowski - Same.

World Cup 2022 Final 16

Senegal - E. Mendy, S. Mane and I.Sarr are 3 of my favorites. Could make a push.
Netherlands - Easy group means they should move on with Senegal.
England - Everything sets up for deep run. How do they screw it up.
U.S.A. - Wales game is massive. Kids finally have to show their worth. I'm betting on them.
Mexico - Went back and forth on this. Can the back line shut down Lewandowski?
Argentina - Last hurrah for some legends of the game.
France - Can't wait to see the final 23. Stacked national team.
Tunisia - Tough little team to come out of a group featuring Denmark, Australia.
Germany - Quietly staking a place at the final. Lots of leaders in this 11.
Spain - Tough group, but I love the youth in this team. Depends on GK.
Belgium - The real group of death (F). But with all the vets, I'm sure they can win it.
Croatia - Last hurrah for this squad too. But maybe overachieved as opposed to Argentina.
Brazil - Don't let me down. But a lot of upset potential in this group.
Cameroon - Picking Andre Onana to shut down Serbia, Switzerland. Just enough.
Portugal - My dark horse to win it. Joao Felix has to shine.
Uruguay - Loads of talent, should get them through.

Senegal vs England - My biggest upset this round - Senegal
U.S.A vs Netherlands - It was a good run - Netherlands
Argentina vs Tunisia - Khazri is good, but not that good - Argentina
France vs Mexico - Intriguing - France
Germany vs Croatia - Love this game. Kroos vs Modric - Germany
Spain vs Belgium - Too soon! - Spain
Brazil vs Uruguay - Thought long and hard - Brazil
Portugal vs Cameroon - It's go time - Portugal

QF's:
Netherlands vs Argentina - Oh my, Messi's last game? - Netherlands
Germany vs Brazil - This is getting out of control - Germany
Senegal vs France - I'm trying to see a scenario, but no - France
Spain vs Portugal - Unbelievable quarters - Portugal

SF's:
Netherlands vs Germany - The reason I started watching - Germany
Portugal vs France - Can the French end his run? - Portugal

Final:
Germany vs Portugal - Delicious - Let's not guess yet.

Final thoughts: This is going to be a crazy season with the World Cup set smack dab in the middle of the season. Good for my beloved Manchester United, as it will buy ETH some time. This is a 3 year project at least, and I hope they give it to him... Barcelona is taking some massive risks with their financial situation, but the addition of Lewandowski and Raphinha (if it happens) could push this attack over the top. Ansu Fati and Pedri will be at the top of the next generation of talent, and Ousmane Dembele has been reborn under Xavi. Regardless of what happens to Frenkie De Jong, this team has some serious potential... PSG is in a crisis; on the one hand they have some of the world's greatest talent and keeping Kylian Mbappe was a huge success although expensive. On the other hand, this new director seems to be building a team for the future with the signings of Vitinho and Hugo Ekitike. They continue to be a complex study of team dynamics, and I don't think this is the group that can win a Champions League. Pick the best 11 in a game that requires victory... can you? There's a reason that Real Madrid continues to thrive in the one off tournament called Champions League and it's because they know. You know. I know. It's going to be Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema, no matter what. Even with all the recent defensive movement, they still have a back line that they trust in every game. From the PSG perspective, do you play Presnel Kimpembe? Sergio Ramos? Marquinhos? Kurzawa? And that's just in defense. They have so many midfield and attacking options, they could probably create 25+ competitive lineups. But which one brings them the coveted trophy... EPL shapes up for a fun season. I'm not sure Tottenham can find title winning consistency, but they finally have a roster to match Manchester City and Liverpool for quality and depth. Dejan Kulusevski might be my favorite underrated forward. He is close to a level of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. And then to add Richarlison and Ivan Perisic to that attacking group? All while keeping Lucas Moura who gives a different dimension to the attack. Tottenham might not be too far off the pace.

Enjoy the season everyone! Share your predictions if you have them!

NFL Preview Nate's 9

Can't believe its been over six months since our last NFL game. I blinked and was already preparing for NFL fantasy drafts, and I blinked again and the Buccaneers and Cowboys were playing each other on Thursday Night Football. I've watched enough NFL Live and read a couple of Star Tribune articles, so I'm going to take a shot and see if I can get the Super Bowl right for the first time in 9 years.

AFC Championship Game:
Tennessee Titans vs  Kansas City Chiefs
Winner: Titans

The championship games I struggled with the most. Those and the AFC North. All three teams are really set up to win now, but it's going to be a dogfight of a division and at the end of the day, any of the three could end up being a top 2 or 3 seed in the AFC. I went with the Titans because they were able to make great improvements on the defensive side of the ball, signing Denico Autry, Janoris Jenkins, and Bud Dupree. Then of course Julio Jones on offense. If Derrick Henry can push for another 1,500+ yards, and AJ Brown continues to be a top 15 receiver, I think they can keep up with the Chiefs. But can they beat the Buccaneers? I'm not sure Ryan Tannehill can outduel Tom Brady, but then I never imagined Nick Foles could do it either.

Nate's 9 Rookies to watch:

9. Kyle Pitts - Atlanta TE. They must have some fun plans for him, as TE's never go in the top 5 of an NFL draft. Even Vernon Davis went 6th.
8. Jamin Davis - Washington ILB. Playing behind NFL's best D-line, could tackle RB's for fun.
7. Trey Lance - San Francisco QB. Maybe the biggest unknown since he played in the FCS, but if he hits, 49ers have their very own Patty Mahomes.

6. Devonta Smith - Philadelphia WR. Probably my favorite college player last year, a threat to score on every catch. A little undersized, hopefully he can withstand the punishement.

5. Najee Harris - Pittsburgh RB. Alabama sure had some weapons last year. Could win the Rookie of the year.

4. Micah Parsons - Dallas ILB. I always thought LaVar Arrington would be best Penn State Linebacker I ever watched, Parsons was probably a little better. Cowboys have a guy for 10 years.

3. Greg Newsome - Cleveland CB. Thought it was interesting he claimed best defensive back in the draft. I thought maybe Patrick Surtain Jr, but I'll let it play out.

2. Trevor Lawrence - Jacksonville QB. Finally. Not since Rodgers have I been this pumped for a QB. Projects just as good for me, but will the Jaguars do what it takes for him to succeed?

1. Mac Jones - New England QB. Bill had Brady for 20 years. Putting Mac in the same spotlight. Can he bring the organization even one title for Bill? All eyes on the Patriots.

Nate's 9 Storylines

1. NFC East. This division is begging for a team to take over for awhile. Giants might have missed on the Daniel Jones pick. Washington has hit on every pick outside of QB (Dwayne Haskins, oh my goodness). Dallas is in a bit of a flux with their O-Line and secondary, and the Eagles are a hodgepodge of different types of players and ideas. I love WFT and their defense, but this division could end with any of the four pushing towards the top.

2. Chicago and SF quarterback battles. So far the veterans have won. But for how long? With the 5 year rookie deals, you only get 80 games to see if the QB you drafted is for you. The Jaguars, Jets and Patriots have already decided to give the 80 to their rookies, how long before all 5 are getting a shot to be the next Mahomes/Trubisky?

3. Los Angeles Chargers. Maybe my favorite roster in the NFL. I liked Herbert more than I liked Burrow and I'll stick by that opinion. Joey Bosa can be one of the best pass rushers in the league, Derwin James is ready for stardom too. And getting Corey Linsley was huge. They could go 10-7, and just miss the playoffs, but I like their upside. Brandon Staley seems like the real deal.

4. Tom Brady. Will it ever end? The guy is 44 years old, and as I'm typing this is on his way to being 1-0 with 4 touchdowns passes. It's insane. You gotta respect it and enjoy the ride.

5. Miami Dolphins. They may have the trickiest schedule in the league. When I started prepping, I thought Miami could win 11 games and get into the playoffs. But their schedule is really tough until November. Two division games to begin, a weird trip to Vegas, and then the Colts and Tampa Bay. Tua won't really have time to develop, a 1-4 start could be disasterous. They did provide him with plenty of weapons though.
     6. Ryan Tannehill. I still don't care for this guy as an NFL starting QB, but he did come off of a career year last year. 33 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions is nothing to scoff at. He worked hard and his teammates really seem to be behind him. My issues were always the professional side; I didn't think he had the personality to win a championship, nor did I think he would fight through the mud. He's got both now, and maybe he takes them to the end.
    7. Kirk Cousins. What an interesting character he has turned out to be. Coming in, I thought he would be a great pick up for the Vikings, because he is able to hit those deep balls and the Vikings had Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs. But Diggs got angry, and the Vikings chose to move on. But it's never really clicked. His cap hits have been really high, and it's made it difficult for the Vikings to keep together really deep teams. Now he is entering the twilight of his career, and doing it in a fuss. No vaccine, which whatever. But in this industry where one game can make or break you, he's going to have to be very solid in his bubble. The Vikings thought he was the key to unlock the super bowl drought, but they might have to move on from this heavily paid individual.
        8. Aaron Rodgers. So much drama. To the point, where I was ready to go with Jordan Love. But, low and behold, with a new contract, number 12 will be throwing passes for the Green Bay Packers again. With Rodgers, they have a really good shot at making the NFC Championship game. Without him, I'm not sure they can win 6 games. The secondary is really good, but the front 7 still needs a bit of work. This does have a feel of a "Last Dance" type season for the Packers.
        9. Jameis Winston vs Taysom Hill. One of the league's most prepared franchises is going into the season with what might be the strangest situation at the starting QB position. They knew pretty early that Drew Brees was retiring, and didn't really achieve any success at finding a replacement for him. I am a fan of Jameis, but I think the NFL is one level too much for him. He was the perfect college QB. Use your talent, and beat the weak. He was able to do it every week. The NFL forces you to beat top players after top players, and talent isn't something that he can just rely on. Taysom Hill is still a gadget player in my mind, and I'm not sure they can go 16 games with him in the role. They have too much talent to only win 4 games, which might force them to play the QB merry-go-round again next year.

NCAA Football Nate's 9

Hey all. Round 2 snuck up on me before I had a chance to put my thoughts down on the tablet. Nebraska and Illinois kicked off the college season today, and it was quite the game. Bret Bielema and the Illini hung on and won 30-22, and even though they'll probably be two of the worst teams in the Big Ten, it was still fun to kick off the college season before September hits.

I'll start by picking the playoffs, then we'll discuss the 9 teams you want to be watching this season, followed by the 9 teams you don't really need to keep an eye on. We'll wrap up with 9 players that you might be watching on an NFL team near you.

Playoff 4: Oklahoma, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State. Why not? Until someone proves otherwise, I'm just going to keep picking these four every year. I will say that I do think two teams can break into the playoff bracket, but they're going to need perfect seasons.

👀

9 to Watch:

9. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Were an overtime away from an undefeated season during the pandemic. I think they can do it again, as the schedule isn't too daunting and they return just about all of their defense. If they can win away at Appalachian State (which won't be as easy as some are lead to believe). They do have one of my favorite signal callers in Grayson McCall, who runs their option offense almost to perfection.

8. Marshall Thundering Herd. This isn't going to be a Randy Moss led offense. Don't expect to see Chad Pennington or Byron Leftwich either. But Grant Wells is a very capable QB for this team, and Corey Gammage is a pretty decent red zone option at WR. They are probably going to be the top team in the MAC, and could end up in the national rankings if they aren't on the wrong side of a divisional upset. If they can beat East Carolina and Navy, then 12-0 might not be out of the question.

7. North Carolina Tar Heels. Aaron Rodgers. Andrew Luck. Trevor Lawrence. And now Sam Howell. He probably completes my Rushmore of college QB's over the past 20 years. Has a rocket arm, think a bit of Ben Roethlisberger combined with a little of Matthew Stafford. Not afraid to stay in the pocket and take a hit. An away trip to Notre Dame and a couple of ACC road hiccups maybe all that stands in the way for North Carolina to take a shot at Clemson in the ACC Championship and a place in the college playoff.

6. Cincinnati Bearcats. Last season they were probably my favorite of the non-Power 5 football teams. I think Luke Fickell is one of the best coaches in the country, and I'm shocked that he's still here coaching the Bearcats. Same goes for their QB Desmond Ridder. I only got to see them twice, but he is a legit dual-threat QB, and they can put up points every 90 seconds if need be. They were unfortunate to lose to the Georgia Bulldogs, and if they are able to get through their schedule this year unscathed, they deserve one of those spots in the college playoff.

5. LSU Tigers. What a strange team. 2 years ago, they were the National Champions. Last year, they were 3-5 at one point, and hung on to just finish .500 by the end of the season. One of their WR's left the program before the season was even complete, and their QB situation might be one of the most unclear heading into the 2021 season. Lucky for them they have one of the nation's best defenses, and a schedule that gives them an opportunity to have double digit wins by the end. Their story with Orgeron will be one of the most fascinating to watch this fall.

4. Iowa State Cyclones. Similar to the Bearcats, 2021 sets up as the year for the Cyclones. They not only have one of the nation's best QB's in Brock Purdy, but they have one of the nation's best teams. They're returning 19 of their 22 starters, and a coach in Matt Campbell that is one of the best in the country as well. Schedule is daunting - a road trip to Oklahoma, and always the tough to beat Hawkeyes, but of all the teams outside the top 4, I think Iowa State has the best chance to break up the party.

3. Oklahoma Sooners. If it's offense you enjoy, watch the Sooners this fall. I honestly think they finally have the team that can challenge the Buckeyes, Tigers and Tide for a spot in the national championship. Spencer Rattler is a high level QB, who throws buckets of touchdowns, and Marvin Mims and Theo Wease might be the best returning tandem of WR's in the nation. The defense has continued to improve the last few years, and with top freshman recruit Billy Bowman coming in (think Charles Woodson), they might finally get past the semi-final curse of years past.

2. USC Trojans. It's been over a decade since we've been able to discuss this program as a national title contender. I still don't think they're there, but they might be the biggest Jekyll and Hyde team in the nation. With their schedule, head coach and QB, there is a scenario where I can see them sitting at 11-1 come end of the season, or they could also be 6-6 with Helton getting fired. Kedon Slovis had some good moments last year in limited games, and should be one of the nation's best QB's. Drake London should be better than what Amon-Ra St. Brown did for them last year. Korey Foreman was the nation's #1 recruit, and should start from day 1. (Nick Bosa like). The Trojans could be the team that messes everything up for a lot of teams if everything starts to click.

1. Georgia Bulldogs. Every year seems to be the year that the Bulldogs are supposed to break through, and win a national championship. I thought it was going to happen with Jake Fromm, and now that same discussion is happening for JT Daniels. Zamir White is probably my favorite RB in college football, and should be a 1st-2nd round pick for some team in next year's draft. He's supported by what might be the nation's best offensive line. The schedule does have some big asks of the team, and they open the season with the Clemson Tigers. Win, and I think they are the team that breaks into the final four (maybe at Clemson's expense?). Lose, and then lose again to Auburn a month later, and the same 11-2 record that continues to burden Georgia looks more and more likely to happen. Kirby's only lost 14 games, but it's time to show what he's made of.

9 teams to Snooze on.

9. Alabama Crimson Tide. See you on January 10th.

8. Clemson Tigers. See you on January 10th.

7. Ohio State Buckeyes. If one of the aforementioned teams fall, see you on January 10th.

6 .Wisconsin Badgers. Great defense, that won't give up an inch. Boring offense, that will struggle to take one.

5. Michigan Wolverines. Wah, wah, wah. Jim Harbaugh deserves a great team. Yeah right. I see more 7-5's in their future.

4. UCLA Bruins. Chip Kelly is trying. He has the players. But they won't be good enough this season.

3. Florida State Seminoles. I love that they're bringing back McKenzie Milton from pasture. But they're going to be so hard to watch. Not too many 5 star recruits anymore.

2. Tennessee Volunteers. They were a staple in the upper echelon of college football when I was in my impressionable years. Peyton Manning. Tee Martin. Casey Clausen. They're not even a whisper of that anymore, and their only All-American mentionable - RB Eric Gray - left for the Oklahoma Sooners. Yawn.

1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Spinning tires perhaps? On a Maserati... They do have to see Wisconsin, North Carolina, Cincinnati and USC. But with Brian Kelly they could find a way to win 10 games. They might even make it to the playoffs again. And then they will draw an Alabama or a Clemson and lose 41-10. Guaranteed.

9 Exciting players to watch this fall:

QB: D.J. Uiagalelei (Clemson). Big shoes to fill, stepping in for that Lawrence guy. But he's good enough to win the Heisman.

CB: Eli Ricks (LSU). Derek Stingley is the best cornerback in the nation, and I'm not sure it's close. But his teammate is going to make QB's think about throwing his way too. Ricks and Stingley could both be All-Americans.

LB Jack Sanborn (Wisconsin). I'm a big linebacker guy. He will be one of the best in the country this fall.

QB: Michael Penix Jr. (Indiana). In 20 years, I was never excited to watch Hoosier football. Last guy that got me amped up for it? Antwaan Randle El. Penix is the opposite of Randle El (he ran, and ran some more), but damn can he make some throws. Keeps Indiana in the top 25 conversation.

DE: Kayvon Thibodeaux (Oregon). Scary pass rusher. Almost Jadeveon Clowney. Could be the best defender in college football.

WR: Justyn Ross (Clemson). A special talent. I always thought that Julio Jones would be the guy to reach those Jerry Rice/Randy Moss/Larry Fitzgerald heights, but I really believe that Ross can do it. Just needs to prove that the injury won't bother him in the long run.

WR: Chris Olave (Ohio State). I think there are potentially 5 1st round draft picks at the WR position. Ohio State has 2 of them. Olave is the sure thing though, and a touchdown waiting to happen on every play.

WR: Garrett Wilson (Ohio State). The DeVonta Smith to Olave's Waddle. Ohio State has a great WR tandem, maybe only matched by Oklahoma. Want to see a WR catch a touchdown? Just tune into the Buckeyes games.

RB/WR/KR Jerrion Ealy (Ole Miss) Ole Miss averaged over 500 yards of offense last year. Ealy is one of the reasons why. (Also google search Matt Corral). I'm not going to throw out the name Deion Sanders for this guy, but he's definitely got a little Devin Hester in him. Probably the most electrifying player in college football.

Thanks! Who do you pick for your national champion?
